Personal Trainer or Training Partner? – Which is Best?
When working out, it doesn’t matter whether you’re in the gym, at the running track, or anywhere else for that matter, you should never underestimate the importance of training with somebody else.
A training partner is one of the most valuable assets you can have when embarking on a fitness journey, but like most things in life, they also provide their own drawbacks. Some people, therefore, choose to hire a personal trainer.
Again, personal trainers can be worth their weight in gold when it comes to getting the most from your workouts, but they too have their downsides. This, then, brings us to the million-dollar question of which is better?
Well, there’s only one way to find out. Here’s a look at the pros and cons of personal trainers and training partners.
Training partner pros
We’ll begin by looking at the pros of training with a training partner. A training partner or workout buddy is basically somebody that you workout with.
They aren’t necessarily experienced when it comes to working out, but they’re there to train with you and they can be advantageous. Here are some pros of training with a partner.
Safety – One of the main benefits of training with a training partner is the fact that they’ll help keep you safe. If you’re bench pressing heavy weight for example, they can provide you with a spot and prevent you from injuring yourself if the weight is too heavy, or if something goes wrong.
Forced reps – If you’re looking to get more from your training, a training partner will help you squeeze out a few extra reps. If you lift weights alone and you reach failure, that’s it. A training partner will help you squeeze a couple of extra reps out.
Fun – Finally, training with a training partner means that training is more enjoyable. You have somebody to talk to between sets and exercises, and you can even add an element of friendly competitiveness.
Training partner cons
There are also downsides to training with a training partner. Cons include:
Potential disruption – In an ideal world everybody would be punctual and on time. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Sometimes people are late and if you’re having to hold up your workout because your partner can’t seem to arrive on time, you will be annoyed.
More time between sets – If you like to train intensely with high volumes, you’ll likely want to minimize rest periods. Training with somebody else means that you spend longer between sets.
Personal trainer benefits
Now we’re going to list a few prominent benefits of personal trainers:
Expert advice – The main reason why people hire a personal trainer is because they offer expert advice. They can show you how to exercise correctly, give you tips, advise you on diet and nutrition, and much more besides.
Accountability – If you’re guilty of skipping workouts or cheating on your diet, a personal trainer will hold you accountable. If you skip sessions, you need to give them an explanation of why you wish to cancel. if you cheat on your diet, you need to explain why your weight is increasing when it should be going down.
Motivation – Another awesome benefit of a PT is motivation. A personal trainer will encourage you, they’ll spur you on, and they’ll help keep you motivated no matter how deflated and fatigued you feel.
Personal Trainer cons
PTs are not without their faults. These include:
Price – Let’s be honest, one downside to personal trainers is that we are not cheap. If funds are limited, look at this as an investment in your health
Not all PTs are good – The sad reality is that not every PT out there is credible or any good. There are plenty of fraudsters out there, and there are plenty of shoddy PTs that are not up to the job.
So, which is better?
Well, this is subjective as both personal trainers and workout partners offer their own advantages and disadvantages. If I had to choose, though, I’d choose a credible and expert personal trainer as we really can prove to be extremely valuable when it comes to exercise, diet, nutrition, and health in general.
